When the nervous system is overwhelmed, even well-intentioned tools can feel like too much. Sometimes what the body needs most is not insight, not release, and not processing—but permission to settle.
This simple somatic practice is designed to gently cue safety through physical sensation alone. It’s non-verbal, body-based, and requires no emotional exploration or mental effort.
Nothing needs to be fixed here. Nothing needs to be understood.
Hand-to-Body Settling Practice
(Somatic | 3–5 Minutes)
This practice uses touch and stillness to help the nervous system recognize that, in this moment, it is safe enough to soften.
Time: 3–5 minutes
Position: Sitting or lying down
The Practice
Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your lower belly
Let your shoulders soften—there’s no need to adjust your posture
Slowly exhale through your mouth once
Allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm
Stay here, noticing the weight and warmth of your hands
There is nothing else to do.
If the Mind Wanders
That’s okay—and expected.
When you notice your attention drifting, gently return to physical sensation, such as:
warmth
pressure
contact
No need to label thoughts or redirect them forcefully. Simply come back to what the body can feel.
Why This Practice Works
The nervous system responds more quickly to sensation than to words. Gentle touch and stillness can help shift the body out of urgency and into a quieter state of regulation—without requiring emotional recall or conscious effort.
This practice sends a simple message to the nervous system:
Nothing is required right now.
And often, that’s enough.
When to Use This Practice
During moments of overwhelm
Before sleep
After a long day
When emotions feel distant or unclear
Anytime you want to settle without doing inner work
You can return to this practice as often—or as briefly—as feels supportive.
A Gentle Reminder
If all you notice is contact between your hands and your body, that counts.
If you feel nothing at all, that also counts.
Presence does not need to feel profound to be regulating.
