Welcome back, friend.
Today, I want to talk about something that often goes unnoticed but can quietly shape the way we move through the world: the belief that our feelings don't matter.
Many of us didn't learn this lesson through words. No one sat us down and said, "Your feelings aren't important."
Instead, we learned it through experiences.
Maybe you were the responsible one.
The easy child.
The helper.
The peacemaker.
Maybe there wasn't much room for your emotions because someone else's needs always seemed bigger, louder, or more urgent.
Over time, you may have learned to push your feelings aside in order to keep the peace, avoid conflict, or simply get through the day.
The challenge is that these patterns often follow us into adulthood.
The Invisible Habit of Ignoring Ourselves
When we've spent years focusing on everyone else's needs, it can feel surprisingly difficult to identify our own.
You may notice yourself asking:
What does everyone else want?
How can I make this easier for them?
What should I do?
Before ever asking:
What do I need?
How do I feel?
What would support me right now?
This habit isn't a character flaw.
It's often a survival strategy that developed long ago.
And survival strategies deserve compassion, not criticism.
A Gentle Pause
Take a moment and place a hand over your heart.
Take a slow breath.
Now ask yourself:
What am I feeling right now?
Don't rush to answer.
Don't try to fix anything.
Simply notice.
You may not have an immediate answer, and that's okay.
Many women who grew up disconnecting from their emotions need time to rebuild that relationship.
Awareness is a practice.
What Healing Often Looks Like
Healing from emotional neglect doesn't usually happen through dramatic breakthroughs.
More often, it looks like:
Noticing your emotions without judging them.
Allowing yourself to rest without earning it.
Asking for help when you need support.
Honoring your needs without guilt.
Practicing self-compassion on difficult days.
Small moments.
Gentle choices.
Tiny acts of self-trust.
Over time, these moments begin to create a new relationship with yourself.
This Week's Reflection
As you move through the week, consider this question:
If my feelings truly mattered, what would I do differently today?
There is no right answer.
Simply notice what comes up.
You don't need to change everything overnight.
You only need to begin listening.
